Introduction

The State Key Laboratory for Advanced Metals and Materials at the University of Science and Technology Beijing was established in 1991 and opened to the public in 1995. Professor Lu Zhaoping serves as the present director of the laboratory. The deputy directors are Professor Zhang Jishan, Professor Lin Junping and Professor Sui Yanli. The laboratory s Academic Committee consists of 15 famous experts in material science. The director of the Academic Committee is Professor Liu CT, an academician of American Academy of Engineering. Currently, the laboratory employs 54 staff members, including 29 professors, 18 associate professors, 5 lectures. Meanwhile, there are 107 Ph.D. Candidates, 119 Master candidates and 8 post-doctoral fellows who are studying and working in the laboratory.

The research activities focus on six areas: fundamental research on advanced structural materials, fundamental research on advanced functional materials, research on new generation metallic materials for infrastructure, advanced processing technology for materials preparation, computer simulation and computer-aided design of advanced metals, power plant materials and life prediction.

The major research projects are as follows: phase diagram and phase formation of advanced intermetallic alloy systems; deformation behavior, ductility and strength of intermetallic alloys; microstructure, interfaces and mechanical properties of advanced  metal-based and intermetallic-based composites; development of nano-crystalline materials; functional effects of materials such as magnetics, electricity, light, sound, heat, force etc., and the physical nature of conversion among them; relationship among the composition, structure processing of functional materials, service condition and functional characteristic of functional materials; buck metallic glasses; spray forming technology of advanced metals and composites; mechanical alloying of nano-crystalline materials and composites; high temperature synthetic technology aided by exothermic reaction; evaluation of mechanical properties for coating and thin film materials; the applications of various empirical potential and computer simulation methods; computer modeling of the phase relationship and phase stability of advanced materials; computer simulation of defects and ordered structure.

The laboratory has so far undertaken a lot of nationally fundamental or applied fundamental research projects such as the 973 Projects, 863 High Tech. Projects, and major or Key Project of the National Natural Science Foundation. A series of impressive achievements have been obtained in the research areas mentioned above. In the latest 5 years, the laboratory has completed or is undertaking about 500 key projects and has received 26 awards at the state, provincial and ministerial levels. More than 200 papers per year are published in domestic and international academic journals, including Advanced Materials, Acs Nanc, Physical Review Letters, J. of American Chemical Soc., Adv. Functional Mater., Nano Letters, the International Materials Review, Appl. Phys. Lett, J. Mater. Res., Scripta Mater., Intermetallics, Metall. Trans., Mater. Sci. Eng., J. Mater. Sci. Letts, Mater Trans. JIM, J. Alloys Compounds, and Mater. & Design.

The laboratory has about 1131 advanced equipments for material processing and characterization, the initial value of them is about 54 million yuan together, and 22 of them is above 1 million yuan, such as TEM, FIB, XRD, SEM, and so on. In addition, five research collaboration platforms, 111 wisdom innovation platform, National advantage discipline innovation platform, Military material platform, Light alloy international R & D Center, production-study-research cooperative platform have been established in last five years.

From 2008 to 2012, 370 visiting scholars have worked at the laboratory with the financial support of the State Education Ministry. Moreover, the laboratory makes use of it s available sources to assist its international counterparts from USA, UK, France, Japan, Germany, Switzerland and Denmark, and exchange information in the various fields of research. Scientists from all over the world are welcomed to do research, visit, train, and cooperate in the research areas covered above.
