报告摘要/Abstract:

The course will provide a general introduction to caloric effects and its relevance in refrigeration applications. It will be shown that giant caloric effects are expected to occur in the vicinity of phase transitions. In the case of first order transitions the influence of dissipative effects and hysteresis will then be considered. The ideas will be illustrated with selected results for prototypical magneto-, electro-, and mechanocaloric materials. Then a general thermodynamic framework to deal with multicaloric effects in multiferroic (magnetoelectric and magnetostructural) materials will be developed. General results will be analysed in detail within the framework of Landau models with two coupled order parameters.

报告人简介/Brief introduction of speaker:

Antoni Planes is a Professor of Physics in the Departament de Física de la Matèria Condensada, Universitat de Barcelona, Catalonia. His recent research is focused on the study of phase transitions in systems with interplay between the structure and magnetism, such as magnetic shape-memory and magnetocaloric materials. He is also active in the study of the influence of disorder in phase transitions, with the aim of understanding precursor phenomena and avalanche criticality in externally driven systems. He has authored and co-authored over 250 publications, including books and reviews and has served as organizer or co-organizer of various international conferences and symposia. He is a member of International Advisory Committees of the International Conference on Martensitic Transitions (ICOMAT) and of the European Symposium on Martensitic Transitions (ESOMAT). He was awarded Distinguished Senior Researcher, Catalan Government, 2002. He is a fellow of the Royal Academy of Sciences and Arts of Barcelona and of the American Physical Society.
